Amber is moving on up!

Amber Massey is the Head of Sector for Hairdressing, Beauty and Barbering at Interserve Learning & Employment (ILE). She is one busy lady, heading up a talented team, whilst keeping abreast of what’s going on in the industry and ensuring the provision is the very best it can be. Amber recently celebrated 10 years with the company and to mark her time with ILE so far, we wanted to share her notable story, so here it is…

Amber began her career in hairdressing, working in a salon called ‘Strands’ in Kirby-in-Ashfield. She worked at the salon for eight years in total and thoroughly enjoyed her time doing so, telling us that she “loved it.”

But Amber saw her career going in a different direction, she had a passion for teaching and this is where she wanted to go next. She took on a teaching qualification (whilst still working at the salon) and went on to teach at the New College in Nottingham teaching Hairdressing Level 3.

Amber taught for a few years before she fancied a new challenge. She bagged a position as an Operations Manager for Hairdressing, before moving across to Interserve. Amber recalls: “I saw an advertisement, applied and came along for an interview and the rest as they say, is history.”

After ten years in post, Amber has experienced many career highlights but counts “meeting and working with such passionate and caring people” as a highpoint. She is particularly proud of the recognition her sector has received and how much it has achieved, she adds: “I’m very proud of the team and how hard they all work.”

Amber is an advocate for apprenticeships and believes that the biggest benefit of them is “real life experience and being able to work on the shop floor and see how the industry works first hand. In the world of hairdressing, beauty and barbering, that salon experience can give you a competitive edge.”

And what does Amber like best about her job? Well the answer is simply: “Everything!”

But when we asked her for more details, she added: “I love my job and the people I work with and I have an amazing team who I really appreciate. Thank you to everyone that I have worked with over the years as I have learnt something off each one of you. Roll on the next ten!”

Managing Director, Chris Peel has recently offered his congratulations to Amber on her ten-year anniversary with Interserve, saying: “A great milestone Amber and thank you for all your significant contributions over that time. It’s such an exciting time ahead for your sector!”

Amber counts herself as fortunate to have a job she loves, working with great people. Her one piece of advice for someone just starting out in their career is: “Don’t give up – if you want something bad enough, you can do it.”
