Northern based recruitment company Castleview Recruitment has been working with national employment and skills provider Interserve Learning & Employment. to deliver an innovative programme called Skills Support for the Unemployed, designed to help jobseekers find work through sector-focused training.
Alan Aufrret relocated to the North West to be near his children, having worked as a production supervisor in Jersey for nine years. Unfortunately he soon found his existing skills and experience were not in high demand in the region and he was unable to find work. Unemployed and claiming benefits for over a year, he was losing hope of finding long-term employment, a hard situation for a man of his years, experience, and work ethic. Realising something different needed to be done Alan applied for a warehousing vacancy through Castleview Recruitment. Although lacking specific skills required for the position,
Alan impressed them with his positive attitude, experience and motivation, and this was enough for them to enrol him on the Skills Support for the Unemployed programme, funded by the European Social Fund and Skills Funding Agency.
Alan received 30 hours of intensive vocational training to ensure he had the skills ready for an interview with the employer. The training included health and safety, manual handling, warehouse operations, fire safety and COSHH as well as good interview techniques.
The interview for the warehousing role went well and Alan got the job! The positive impact on his life since then has been considerable; financial security, providing for his family, long-term career prospects, increased self-esteem and confidence, as well as the wider economic impacts on his family, friends and local community.
“We are really happy that Alan got the job, he deserves it after all the hard work he put in to retrain for the position. Through our skills programme with Interserve Learning & Employment. we ensured that he was work-ready when he sat down in front of the employer, we trained and supported him all the way to the door but then it came down to just him and his ability to shine at interview, and he did brilliantly!” Commented Helen Holmes, Manager at Castleview.
“At a time when the UK jobless figure is over 2.5 million, it is worth remembering that behind the headlines there are stories of real people struggling and achieving success in the face of adversity” Helen continued, “These are stories of hope and everyone who gets a job is a good news story to be celebrated – and this definitely includes Alan”.
This is just one example of the way that Castleview and Interserve Learning & Employment. have been actively helping local people into work . They have lots of vacancies for positions in a range of industries which are open to everyone. Even if applicants don’t have the specific skills for the job, they will be able to re-skill for success just as Alan has.
