The Employer

The Spinney Day Nursery was set up 18 years ago by husband and wife, Alison and John Thomson. Their aim was to provide the local community with a childcare facility that cares not just for children but for families. .

When Apprenticeship Resourcing Executive, Sue Bowen, from Interserve Learning & Employment met with John and Alison, it was clear what they wanted to gain from hiring an apprentice.

Talking of their initial business needs, Alison said

“Young people are generally open minded. They are willing to absorb and take in the necessary skills required to make a good childcare practitioner.”

After successfully interviewing candidates, The Spinney Day Nursery hired two apprentices who are now progressing well.

The Apprentice

When Nicole Patchet found out about apprenticeships online, she decided to get in contact with the team at Interserve.

Nicole met with an Apprenticeship Resourcing Executive at their Liverpool office and told her all about her goal to become a teacher.

Nicole wanted to find an alternative route to going back to college and after Interserve advised her of the possibilities that were open to her and she made the decision to complete an apprenticeship in childcare.

As an apprentice she would gain her NVQs at the same time as earning a wage and gaining valuable experience. This was the perfect route for her to be able to work towards her degree and aspirations.

Nicole said, “I was in a job I hated and it was getting me down. I took a pay cut to do my apprenticeship as I knew I would gain the experience others wouldn’t have and in the long term I would be better off.” Nicole is now going from strength to strength.

During her time as an apprentice, not only has she acquired the valuable expertise needed to become a skilled nursery practitioner, but Nicole has learnt to deal with many different types of people and a wide range of ages, helping her to grow her confidence.
